これまで「絵画的な彫刻」を探求してきた中で、本岡はより直接的な絵と彫刻の関係性の構築に着目しました。そして、実際の漫画を変形させた作品や、ビニールプールを用いた作品など、既製品の中にある「絵」 を彫刻作品に取り入れた最新作「IMMANENT FOLDシリーズ」を発表します。素材と作品に現れる表象との関係性はよりリテラルなものとなり、見えてくる図像と実際の物質との間を探求しつつ、彫刻が情報化することへ批判的な自問を繰り広げています。本展では、絵と彫刻の関係性をさらに乗り越え、より普遍的な図像と物質の関係性へ向けて、新たな試みを提示します。
アーティストステートメント
本展で発表する作品群は、図像(イメージ)と物質(マテリアル)のあいだに横たわる境界を、折り目として可視化する試みである。
今回私が扱う素材は、漫画や絵本などの印刷物、ビニール、布、空気など、軽さと脆さを宿した日常的なものが中心である。これらはポップな視覚性を強調しながらも、皺や歪み、沈み込みといった物質固有の力を帯びている。
私は、この「図像」と「物質」が別個のものとして対立するのではなく、内部で互いを折りたたみ、侵食し合ってしまう関係に関心を持っている。図像は支持体を超えて物質の表面に滲み込み、逆に物質は図像を押し返し、ねじ曲げ、圧縮してゆく。それらは単なる装飾でも素材研究でもなく、内在的な力の交換として現れているように見える。同時に普段なら即座に読み取られるはずの情報は、物質のふるまいに引き伸ばされて、形態の中に滞留している。
「折り目(fold)」とは、こうした図像と物質の応答が形として定着する瞬間である。図像が物質に、物質が図像に変わり続ける生きた運動、その折り目に宿る新たな可視性を求めている。
本岡景太
1999年広島県生まれ。2024年東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科彫刻専攻修士課程修了。同年、同研究領域博士後期課程在学中。「歪曲張り子」という独自の技法で彫刻作品を制作する。彫刻と絵画の中間に位置するような作品を生み出し、芸術の探求を行っている。2024年「貼る点の遥か」文ヵ学、2023年「めくりあげたら衛星が飛んだ」MATTER、などの個展をはじめとした、日本各地のギャラリーでの数多くの展覧会を開催した。「EASTEAST」や、台北で行われた「ARTFUTURE 藝術未來2024」などのアートフェア、「宮若国際芸術トリエンナーレ」などのトリエンナーレにも参加している。

Through his exploration of 'painting-esque sculptures', Motooka has focused on building a more direct relationship between painting and sculpture. He then created his latest IMMANENT FOLD series, which incorporates drawings from ready-made products into sculptural works, such as work where he deforms actual manga, or work that uses a vinyl pool. The relationship with symbols that appear in the material or work becomes more literal; a critical self-inquisition towards the informatisation of sculpture unravels, as he explores between the emerging image and actual substance. At the Tofuku-ji Temple Shoin exhibition, a new endeavor that further transcends the relationship between painting and sculpture, striving for a more universal relationship between image and material will be presented.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The body of work presented at this exhibition, is an exploration to visualise the boundary that lies between the image and the material as folds. The materials I address here, are mainly printed matters such as manga or picture books, and daily commodities such as vinyl, textiles or air, which carry lightness and fragility. While they emphasise a pop visual, they also harbour energies unique to materials, such as creasing, distortion and sinking.
Rather than this image and material being in conflict as individual things, I am interested in the relationship where they internally collapse and erode each other. The image transcends the support bleeding into the material surface, and alternately, the material pushes against the image, distorting and compressing it. These are not simply decorations or material research, but they seem to appear as an exchange of internalised energy. At the same time, the information that would usually be immediately understood, becomes stagnant within the format, as it becomes outstretched by the material's behaviour.
A fold, refers to the moments when the reactions of these images and materials establish as a form. I am pursuing a new visuality that resides in the folds, of the living movement where image continues to change into material, and material into image.
Keita Motooka
Born in Hiroshima, 1999. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Fine Arts master's program in Sculpture in 2024. Currently enrolled in the doctoral program in Sculpture at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Motooka creates sculptures using his unique "distorted papier-mâché" technique. He explores art, creating work that is midway between sculpture and painting. He has held numerous exhibitions at galleries across Japan, including solo exhibitions "Far from traces" at Bunkagaku in 2024 and "When I Flip It Up, a Satellite Flies" at MATTER in 2023. He has also participated in art fairs such as "EASTEAST", and "ART FUTURE 2024" held in Taipei, and triennials such as the "Miyawaka International Art Triennale".
