松岡柚歩 Yuzuho Matsuoka

Profile

1996年兵庫県生まれ。2021年京都芸術大学大学院修士課程芸術研究科美術工芸領域油画専攻修了。　
現在は京都を拠点に活動。主な展覧会に2024年 個展「目の裏」CANDYBAR Gallery（京都）、2023 年「Idemitsu Art Award アーティストセレクション 2023」国立新美術館（東京）、2023 年 個展「狭めた視界」京都蔦屋書店 ギャラリー（京都）など。主な受賞歴に2025年「群馬青年ビエンナーレ2025」入選、2020 年「シェル美術賞 2020」学生特別賞など。

Born in Hyogo in 1996. Completed the master’s program in Oil Painting at Kyoto University of the Arts Graduate School in 2021. Currently based in Kyoto.
Major exhibitions include the solo exhibition “Behind the eyes” at CANDYBAR Gallery, Kyoto (2024), “Idemitsu Art Award Artist Selection 2023” at The National Art Center, Tokyo (2023), and solo exhibition “Narrowed vision” at Kyoto Tsutaya Books Gallery, Kyoto (2023).
Awards include selection for the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists 2025 and the Student Excellence Award at the Shell Art Award 2020.

Statement

コロナ禍の体験をきっかけとし、身の回りや世界の状況が不透明に感じられる場面に疑問をより感じるようになり、視覚情報の不確かさや見えているものの背後に潜む構造への関心が高まった。絵画を視覚と知覚のあいだに生成される関係性の場として再考し、レイヤーや隣り合う色の作用などといった絵画的要素を通じて、「見る」という行為の曖昧さや揺らぎを可視化することを試みている。

Since experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic, I began to hold more questions towards what felt like unclear situations around myself and the world, which lead to a stronger interest towards the uncertainty of visual information, and the structures behind what is visible. By reinterpreting paintings as a place for relationships generated between vision and perception, I attempt to visualise the ambiguity and fluctuation of the action of seeing, through elements of painting such as the effects of neighbouring colours and layers.

松岡は、絵具を積層していくという非常にプリミティブな絵画行為を一貫して行っている作家である。代表作である〈outline〉シリーズでは、まずキャンバスに格子を描き、その上から色面を重ね貼りしていく。そこには色や形、特に四角形への強い執着が見られる。それは単なる「描く」というよりは、絵画の内部にさらに絵画を重ねていくような試みでもある。幾重にも重なり合う窓の格子を覗き込むかのような、絵画の中の絵画に入り込んでいくような終わりなき視覚体験の装置でもある。

Matsuoka is an artist who consistently practices the highly primitive act of painting – of layering paints. In her signature outline series, she first depicts a lattice on the canvas, and then adheres surfaces of colour on top. A strong fixation towards colours and shapes, especially squares can be seen. It seems to be a practice of layering another painting within the painting, rather than simply depicting. It is also a device for the endless visual experience of peering into the window lattice that continues layer upon layer, as if to enter the painting-in-painting.
