広瀬里美 Satomi Hirose

Profile

1998年埼玉県生まれ。2024年東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科彫刻専攻修了。普遍的で不変的な、存在ないし命の本質について模索しながら、主に土を素材とした彫刻を制作している。2023年個展「寄る辺」、2024年個展「素晴らしくくだらない」、同年個展「小さな重み」、同年二人展「忘れないてざわり」など、存在の重みについて考え、問いかける展示を展開する。

Born in Saitama in 1998. Received an MFA in Sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2024. Through her work, she explores the universal and unchanging essence of existence and life, creating sculptures primarily using earth as her material. Exhibitions include the solo shows “Anchor” (2023), “Extremely Wonderful and Corny” (2024), “Small Being” (2024), and the two-person exhibition “An Unforgettable Touch” (2024), all of which engage with the core of existence and pose questions about its significance.

Statement

「生きることとは何か」「死とは何か」。東日本大震災の時、漠然と感じた存在についての疑問を、私はまだ探している。惰性的にのうのうと生きている私と、まだ生きていたかった誰かの命との差はあるのか。存在の本質とはどこにあるのか。誰かにとっての大切な誰かの命の重みが、まるで取るに足らないことのように軽く扱われる現実が今もある。私は、本当に大切なものは何か、どう生きていくべきなのか、制作を通して探究を試みる。

What does it mean to live? What is death? I still look for answers to the indefinite question towards existence that I felt during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Is there a difference between me, living complacently by habit, and the life of someone who still wanted to live? Where is the true nature of existence? Reality still exists where the precious life of someone, dear to another, gets treated lightly as if something insignificant. Through my practice, I attempt to explore what is truly important, and how life should be lived.

Satomi Hirose is a sculptor who explores the universal nature of existence and life using clay as her primary medium. Since experiencing the 2011 Tohoku earthquake she bears the question of what it means to live, quietly communicating the significance of life through the textures and forms of the material.
