品川美香 Mika Shinagawa

Profile

1988年熊本県生まれ。2016年京都造形芸術大学大学院修士課程修了。現在は京都(スタジオハイデンバン)を拠点に活動。日本のみならず、韓国、中国、アメリカ、ドイツの個人・企業に多数コレクションがある。わからないことや解決が難しい物事について考えるために、「私とは何か、人間とは何か」というテーマを軸に、子ども、スカル、隕石、山、植物、昆虫などの、作家が選んだ象徴的な記号を組み合わせながら、見る者によってあらゆる解釈が可能となる絵画を描く。

Born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1988.
Shinagawa completed her Master’s degree at Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2016, and is currently based in Kyoto’s Studio Haidenban.
Her works are held in numerous private and corporate collections not only in Japan, but also in South Korea, China, the United States and Germany.
The artist creates paintings with the possibility of all interpretations from the viewer, in order to approach things that are difficult to understand or problems that are difficult to solve, guided by the thematic question “What am I? What does it mean to be human?”, combining symbolic motifs the artist selects such as children, skulls, meteorites, mountains, plants and insects.

Statement

私は、わからないことや解決が難しい物事について考えるために絵を描いています。作品は、見る人の環境や経験によって感じ⽅が違いますが、子どもの瞳にはマクロとミクロのイメージを描き、蜜蜂は蜂群崩壊症候群など、それぞれメタファーを持ちます。それらは小さな命の存在と、歴史や宇宙などの大きな存在とのつながりを示唆していて、私にとって道具主義や功利主義では無く一つ一つの命そのものに価値があることを意味します。

I paint to think about things I don’t understand or are difficult to solve. Depending on the environment and experiences of the viewer, how they feel may be different, but each artwork has its own metaphors, such as the macro and micro images in the eyes of a child, or honey bees with colony collapse disoder. They suggest the connection between the existence of small lives and the larger existences of history or the universe, meaning that to me each life itself has value, and is not about instrumentalism or utilitarianism.

Mika Shinagawa portrays the transience of existence and power of inheritance through portraits of children. The intricate brushwork forms a screen where narrative and sense of reality intersect, leading the emotions that inhabit the painting to a new dimension. By layering Japanese notions of nature with personal experiences, she unfolds a creative exploration where the individual and universal co-resonate; I am eager to see her next development, with a deeper expression delving into the origin of life and the universality of human existence.
