Profile

1972年兵庫県尼崎市生まれ。
1995年京都造形大学芸術学部美術科　洋画コース卒業。
2012年より共同アトリエ「きくや」主宰

Born in Amagasaki, Hyogo in 1972.
BA in Western Painting, Kyoto University of Art and Design in 1995.
Director of the shared Atelier ‘Kikuya’ since 2012.

Statement

置くだけでその場の空気が変わるような小さな作品を制作しています。

I create small artwork that changes the atmosphere of a place, just by being placed there.

大学で教える中、若手と呼ばれる人たちが作り出すものを常日頃見ている。彼らの作品もしくは自分自身の作品でさえ、美術の内側で作られていることで、どこか既視感のようなものが漂っている。山下さんも芸術大学を卒業したが、30年のキャリアの中で、そのような内側で物事を規定するルールのおかしさに気付いた。敢えてルールから逸脱したものを作るのではなく、ルールから逸脱してしまう存在を全面的に肯定し、見て、見られて、育て、育てられ、つくり、つくられ、共存する。そこで生まれたものたちは、かたくなった視界をほぐし、あらためて世界と出会うことの新鮮な驚きを与えてくれる。

Teaching at a university, I see the things created by young people all the time. Their artwork, and even my own, have a sense of déjà vu as they are created within art. Yamashita also graduated from an art university, however, in his career of 30 years, he became aware of the absurdity of such rules that internally define things. Rather than purposefully creating things that deviate from rules, he affirms the entirety of existences that can’t help but deviate from rules, and he sees and is seen by, nurtures and is nurtured by, creates and is created by, and coexist with them. The things born from here, unwind a stiffened perspective, and give us the fresh surprise of meeting the world once more.
