Statement

木版画の立体化を通して、昔の日本文化をモチーフに制作をしています。
その中でも、表立っていない裏の部分に焦点を当て、普段は陽の当たらない陰の中にあるモノの持つ力強さを作品の軸としています。

I create work using Japanese culture of the past as motif, through three-dimensional woodblock prints.
I especially place a focus on the hidden areas that aren’t very public, and use the powerfulness that what usually are in the shadows and away from light hold, as an axis of my work.

日本は版画の国と言われてきた。江戸後期、浮世絵版画という庶民にまで行き渡る芸術的な媒体が、技術的にも芸術的な観点からも高度であったこと、さらにはその芸術が19世紀フランスの印象派に何らかの影響を与えたこと等がその理由の一端である。さて、須崎喜也はその木版画によって新しい表現を獲得した。かつて1970年代日本において、版表現の可能性を模索する動きがあった。しかしながらその動向は新しいテクノロジーに頼る事実があったことは否めない。須崎は版画の原点である木版画に、これまで取り上げられることが殆どなかった側面から新たな表現手法を創出したのである。それが何であるのか、鑑賞する者一人ひとりが、しっかりと須崎の作品と対面して確認して欲しい。

Japan has been known as the country of woodblock prints. Part of the reason would be the high level, from a technical and artistic perspective, of the art medium of Ukiyoe-prints that circulated the common people in late Edo period, and that this art also had some kind of influence towards French Impressionism in the 19th century. Yoshinari Susaki has achieved a new expression with this woodblock printing. In 1970s Japan, there used to be a movement to explore the possibilities of print expressions. However, the fact that this movement relied on new technology cannot be denied. Susaki has conjured a new method of expression to woodblock printing, the origin of print art, from a perspective that had not really been adopted before. My hope is for each viewer to confirm what that is, through actually interacting with Susaki’s work.
