八島良子 Ryoko Yashima

Profile

1993年広島県江田島市生まれ、尾道市百島在住。
現在は豚のアートプロジェクト「メメント・モモ」を中心とした制作活動とNPO法人ART BASE百島の企画運営を行なっている。

Born in 1993 and currently based in a remote island of Momoshima, Hiroshima.
She is currently expanding on “Memento Momo” – her art project with a pig named Momo, while managing the non-profit gallery ART BASE MOMOSHIMA.

タブーと向き合い、現実と仮想の体験の限界を探ることで表現の新たな可能性を見出したい。

By confronting taboos and exploring the limits of reality and virtual experiences, I want to discover new possibilities of expression.

ファッション又は皮膚、皮層を揺蕩う情報から、人間の深部を顕にしてきた八島の新作「メメント・モモ」は、人間と他種間に横たわる関係を入り口に、人類の抱える永遠に答えの出ないかの様な大きな矛盾に身を委ねる作品だ。マクロには食や畜産システム、生命倫理等の問題であり、ミクロには極私的な二人(二匹)の愛と魂の物語である。八島の血肉となったモモは、多くの作品と問い掛けを私たちに残した。生と死のコントラストに目眩を覚えながらも、私たちもまた、“モモを忘れない”だろう。

Characterised by exposing the depths of humans through fashion, or information that drifts the skin and cortex, Yashima’s new work Memento Momo is a piece that surrenders itself to the huge contradiction of humanity that seems to be ever unanswerable, through the relationship between a human and another species. In the macro, this is about food, the livestock system, and bioethics; in the micro, this is an intimate story of the love and soul of two (animal and human). Momo, who has become the blood and flesh of Yashima, has left us with many questions and works of art. Even while dizzied by the contrast of life and death, we too will surely ‘remember Momo’.
