前谷開 Kai Maetani
Profile
1988年愛媛県生まれ。神奈川県在住。2013年 京都造形芸術大学（現・京都芸術大学）大学院 芸術研究科表現専攻修了。主な展覧会に、「余の光／Light of My World」（旧銀鈴ビル、京都府福知山市、2021）、「六本木クロッシング2019 展：つないでみる」（森美術館、東京、2019）など。
Born in Ehime, Japan in 1988. Lives and works in Kanagawa. Graduated with MFA from Kyoto University of Art and Design (currently Kyoto University of the Arts) in 2013. Selected exhibitions include “Light of My World” (Ginrei Building, Fukuchiyama, Kyoto, 2021), “Roppongi Crossing 2019: Connexions” (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2019).

Statement
自身の行為を変換し、確認するための方法として主に写真を使った作品制作を行う。都市や自然、あるいは他者との関係において、時々に発生する状況に対する自身の立ち位置について確かめながら、そこに入り込み、写真や映像、身体を介してそれらを記録し、作品として提示する。個人的でありながら開かれているような、新たな経験の共有を試みている。
I make artworks mainly using photography as a method of transforming and confirming my own actions. While confirming my position in relation to situations that appear from time to time in the city, in nature, or in relation to others, I enter these situations, and present them as artworks by documenting them through photographs, videos, and my body. I attempt to share a new experience that is at once personal and yet also open.

前谷の作品においては、「距離」は重要な役割を果たしている。自然や風景の中に自己を置く行為は、世界の中で自己がどのように存在しているかを知ることであると同時に、その世界の存在すらも曖昧になった時に自己と他者との「距離」を測ることによって境界を確認し、世界の存在を認知しているように思える。それは前谷にとって、性＝生の営みそのものであり、それはこの世界でどう生きるのかと同義でもある。

Distance plays an important role in Maetani’s work. His gesture of placing the self inside nature or sceneries, seems to be his way of understanding how the self exists in the world, as well as confirming boundaries and perceiving the world when the world’s existence itself becomes ambiguous, by assessing the distance between the self and others. To Maetani, this is the act of procreation or life itself, and synonymous to how to live in this world.
