A solo exhibition by Shohei Yamamoto, an artist who creates paintings using rollers to manually repeat paint, will be held at ygion.

Shohei Yamamoto creates paintings with a method of using original rollers to repeat iconographs and images, that are neither painted nor not painted. His new series Calcite on Myth, repeats paint mixed with grounded calcite, on top of photographs of sculptures from Greek Mythology which possess an authority. The conditions for the artwork are pre-calculated from relentless experiments including simulations on the computer screen, and paints with different mixing ratios. By repeating the formulated paint with his roller, traces of a deteriorating pattern appear on the surface of the transferred iconograph. What kind of pattern will be depicted on the iconograph, by the plan and prediction made by the artist (human), and the repetition and multiple micro-accidentalities made by the roller (tool), and how will the iconograph now under the pattern appear from the other side of the traces? The viewer becomes aware that they are being questioned as they stand in front of the artwork. (Nozomi Nagata, translated by Yumiko Deguchi)

Born in 1994, Kanagawa. Completed his masters program in Painting at the Graduate School of Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2019. Awards include Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2019, French Embassy Prize. Solo exhibitions include Re:Reiterate, at Institut français du Japon - Tokyo in 2020. He creates paintings that questions the meaning of entity. He repeats paint by hand preserving physicality, using original rollers.
