Statement

ガラス製の既製品に熱を加え変形させた作品を発表しており、何十本ものガラス瓶が溶け合わさった塊のような作品と、ガラス瓶の首の伸びた作品に大別出来ます。
熱を加え重力に従って変形させる様を提示する作品や、大量のガラス製品を自作の窯のような装置で溶かすパフォーマンス作品、空間へアプローチをしたインスタレーション作品なども制作しています。

I create work that deforms ready-made glass products by applying heat, which can be roughly divided into work that looks like blocks of dozens of glass bottles melted together, and glass bottles with a stretched neck.
I also produce work that shows how heat is applied and deforms according to gravity, performances melting large quantities of glass products with a self-made kiln-like device, and installations that engage with the space.

大東が魅了されている素材は「ガラス」である。既存のガラス瓶に熱を加え、ガラスという素材の偶然と必然を楽しむかのように作り出される作品は、時に儚く時にダイナミックで、形という概念を根底から変えてしまうかのごとく強烈で美しい。私たちが普段目にする「ガラス」は冷たく硬いイメージだが、大東の作品ではまるで生命が宿ったかのように熱と存在感を放つ。単なる制作のプロセスを、物質に命を与える魔法へと変えてしまうその表現力に、鑑賞者は驚かされることだろう。

The material which fascinated Daito is glass. His work created by adding heat to glass bottle products, as if to enjoy the contingency and inevitability of the glass material, is at times ephemeral and at times dynamic, and intensely beautiful as if to change the idea of form from its roots. The glass that we normally see, has a cold and hard image, however, Daito’s work emits heat and presence like it embodies life. The viewer is sure to be surprised at his expression that changes a simple process of production into magic that gives life to material.
