Statement

2022年から肖像画を描いている。
自画像は自分自身をきっかけに「キャラクター」としての虚像を形作るものであった。しかし肖像画は、外見上の姿や社会的な立ち振る舞い=「キャラクター」を一度解体し、スケッチを通して人物と私の心が触れ合うことで、再び新たに「キャラクター」が生み出されるのが面白い。
他者の知らない顔に出会う時、想像力が掻き立てられ、感情が揺れ動く。そこに絵を描く楽しみがある。

I have been painting portraits since 2022.
Self-portraits were a way of creating from myself, virtual images as characters. However, portraits are interesting in that they first dismantle characters – the outward appearance or social behavior, to then create new characters through the connection between the person and my heart through sketching.
When I encounter a stranger’s face, my imagination is stirred and my emotions are moved. That is where I find joy in painting.

ゴッホに刺激を受けた清方は、油絵の具の物質性を強調した作品を創って来た。
自画像の作品は、盛り上がった油絵の具で本来の色も無くなり、写実性からも離れ、アニメや漫画のキャラクター風になり絵の具で出来た塑像とも言える絵画である。現在はスケッチを元にした友人達の肖像画を制作している。スケッチによるモデルと作者の心の触れ合いが、新しい清方のキャラクターを生み出している。今後の展開が楽しみである。

Inspired by Gogh, Kiyokata creates artwork that emphasises the material properties of oil paint.
His self-portraits of thickly mounted oil paint, lost of original colour, also far from realism, appear like anime or manga-style characters; the paintings could be called statues made from oil paint. He currently creates portraits of friends based on sketches. The contact between the model and artist’s mind achieved through sketching, creates Kiyokata’s new characters. I look forward to his future development.
