Puffed rice is a snack made by putting rice under a pressure, and suddenly releasing the pressure that puffs the rice to 10 times its original volume, with a large popping sound. Puffed rice used to be sold at portable stalls that came by our neighbourhoods, as a truck loaded with a pressure chamber when we were children. The puffed rice machine was rediscovered by Toshiko Yoshimura, an elementary school teacher, during World War II. Yoshimura designed and built the first machine in Northern Kyushu, centre of the steel industry at the time, whilst manufacturing military supplies, so that children could fill their stomachs during the food shortage. TANATSU reflects on war and peace, life and death through the snacks made of rice.

Yotta

A contemporary art unit founded in 2010 by Kimitaka Kisaki and Hiromichi Yamawaki. All boundaries in the society including genres, categories, rules and unwritten rules, become their stage of presentation, creating work to fuse such boundaries. Currently they are working on a series to re-perceive the globe through their own identities. In 2015 they received the Taro Okamoto Award for their magnum opus “Kintoki” at The 18th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art. They have also been invited to Roppongi Art Night 2010 & 2012, Osaka Canvas 2011, 2012, 2016, Reborn-Art Festival 2017, 2019, Setouchi Triennale 2019, and more. They spread their field of activities, producing the Noseden Art-Line 2017, and running art workshops for children in elementary schools and public/private art centres.
