Statement

I am interested in the way one of the things involved is transformed by the “temporary absence” of the other. The object may be an organic matter or a building, or a meaning or value. It’s not only a visible change, but sometimes the state of affairs is quietly transformed, neither better nor worse. I think that it is possible to bring to the surface what can be found, by subtracting something, through the medium of photography, which allows us to capture and observe the image as it is, temporarily.

Testimonial

Black and darkness are not the colours of paint or ink. There are an infinite number of layers there, with complex cultures and thoughts that does not permit careless involvement. Since entering university, Maebata has always confronted the layers of ‘black’ embodied by the night, through the medium of photography. It is still new to memory that her artwork in Universal Music HQ’s collection, realised through AFK, gained much attention and lead to the collaboration of art and music.
