Statement

　かなり前のことだが、酒に酔い路上で吐いてしまったことがある。街を汚したことに落胆していると、「汚くないよ、ほら。」と友人は言い、ヘドをすくってペロッと舐めた。
　私にとって絵を描くことはヘドを舐めるようなことかもしれない。言い換えれば、生活で経験するあらゆる出来事をよく観察し、イメージと物質の均衡の中でゆっくりと手を動かすことである。そして、「ヘド」が「おいしそうな料理」として現れる絵をつくりたい。

Many years ago, I got really drunk and threw up on the street. While I felt really disappointed for making the town dirty, one of my friends scooped up my vomit with his hand and licked it, saying to me “it’s not dirty, see!”.
Painting might be like licking vomit to me. In other words, painting is observing the things I experience in my life, and slowly moving my hand in the balance between image and substance. I want to create a painting where “vomit” becomes an “appetizing dish”.

　清水さんとは、何度か展覧会の設営を一緒にやっている。僕がぼーっと会場をみていると、周りの道具をさっと片付けてくれる。そうかと思うと、何度も同じ冗談を言って遊んでくれたりする。清水さんの絵は、個人的な出来事が主題になることが多いが、どうもその描き方にも折り目正しさと湿ったユーモアが顔を出してくる。だから、いくら生めかしい物体を描いていてもドロドロにならない。そんな手の内を持ち合わせているのだ。

I have worked with Shimizu on a number of occasions installing exhibitions. He quickly clears up tools that are lying around, while I vacantly observe the venue. However, he also playfully communicates with me, telling the same jokes over and over. Personal experiences are often depicted in Shimizu’s paintings, but his politeness and moist humour peeks through the way he paints. So, however graphic the object is that he paints, it doesn’t become heavy. He has this way of going about things.
