Statement

People do not appear in the sceneries I paint. My paintings become complete when the people who come to see them enter the painted sceneries and intervene in them. I want to use the sceneries of Hokkaido where I was born and grew up, and scenes from my personal life as motifs to produce my paintings. I want to depict paintings that can empathize with people while unraveling their feeling of deficiency, loneliness, and nostalgia. I believe it is my role to provide a means to reconstruct people’s original landscapes. And I will be happy if I can share the scenes presented through “my eyes” with others.

Testimonial

The pictorial space supported by the short vertical forms that have gained independence from nature, quietly begin to circulate as a soil with its own laws. Though the subject of Okuyama’s paintings is nature, you can also sense the undepicted humans, and there is consideration towards both parties. It seems like there is a connection to her perspective of nature that was nurtured by the unique climate and environment of Hokkaido where she grew up. She believes that her role is to depict the primordial landscapes that sleep inside us, and the scenes that she paints, discretely act upon our lives as a creative emphasis, as we easily forget important things.
