大河原光 Hikari Okawara

Profile

1988年宮城県生まれ。2015年京都造形芸術大学大学院修士課程修了。人と環境との関わりをとらえることを大きなテーマとしながら、都市および郊外をフィールドに写真による作品制作を続ける。近年の主な個展に15年「Heterotopia」（KUNST ARZT、京都）、15年「Beyond the Landscape KYOTO」（京都的芸術廉价中心）など。

Born in Miyagi, 1988. Completed his master’s degree at Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduate School in 2015. Taking the relationship between humanity and the environment as his major theme, he works on the creation of photographic artwork in the city and suburbs. Recent major solo exhibitions include “Heterotopia” (KUNST ARZT, Kyoto, 2015) and “Beyond the Landscape KYOTO” (Kyoto Art Outlet Center, 2015).

Statement

ミシェル・フーコー（Michel Foucault, 1926-1984）は、現実に存在するが、他のどの場所とも異なる性質をもつ場所を「HETEROTOPIA（ヘテロトピア）」と呼んだ。私は都市空間の中にある墓地など、ある特定の性質をもった場所を写真を用いて記録する。それは、HETEROTOPIAという考えを軸に、写真による記録を通して、その場所の持つ性質を捉え表象しようとする試みである。

Michel Foucault (1926–1984) used the word heterotopia for a place that really exists but has a character completely unlike any other place. I record with my camera places that have a specific character, such as urban graveyards. Based on the concept of heterotopia, I take pictures with my camera, and try to capture and convey the unique character of those places.

彼の作品では、墓地や高速道路の建設現場などがモチーフとして選ばれている。それらの場所は私たちの生活に近いところにあるはずだが、人の気配からは遠く離れた様子の作品が多い。また採集されたそれぞれの風景からは、物語性が排除されており、私たちが知っているそれとは異なる様子が立ち現れている。日常生活の背景として何気なく消費されていく景色を彼の作品の中で再構築した時に、その表層にあるものと、時間の経過や歴史の重なりなど、深層に隠されたものがありありと浮かび上がる。

Graveyards and construction sites of highways are selected as motifs in Okawara’s work. Although these locations are somewhat close to our lives, many of his works seem to be distant from human activity. All narrative has been removed from the scenes that he has collected, and appear in a different light to that of what we know. When the sceneries that are mindlessly consumed as backgrounds of our daily lives are reconstructed in his work, what lies on the surface, and what is hidden in the deeper layers, such as the time and history that has accumulated, is exposed.
