STATEMENT
日本特有の文字であるひらがなは、中国から伝わった漢字をもとに、今から約1千年以上前に生み出されました。部首や作りから複雑な意味や読みを持つ漢字を筆による見た目の単純化だけでなく、それ自体に意味はなく、またほとんどの文字は１つの音でしかないという、様々な意味で単純化という作業が行われています。また、そぎ落とす、という意味での単純化は達磨を祖とする禅宗からわひさびという日本独自の思想にも言えます。これは日本独特の「型」に置き換える行為でもあります。そしてその「型」はブルーノタウトによって賞賛され、バウハウスなどのモダン建築にも影響を与えました。
伝統的な日本絵画の素材を使いつつ、近代的な要素、表現を織り交ぜ現代の日本絵画を作りたいと考えています。
The Japanese writing form, hiragana, was created roughly 1000 years ago, based on the kanji imported from China. They are not only visual simplifications by stroke of the various stems and parts, but have no meaning on their own, mostly only have one pronunciation, and thus are simplified in many dimensions. Simplification in terms of removing, can also be seen in the Japanese ideology of wabi-sabi, the Japanese subtleties, that come from Zen where Dharma stands as the founder. This is a method of altering things into a Japanese form. This form was highly appraised by Bruno Taut, and has inspired modern architectural movements such as the Bauhaus. I wish to create contemporary Japanese paintings, using traditional Japanese materials but also mixing modern aspects and expressions.

品川亮は大学院で頭角を現した新進の画家である。江戸琳派の鈴木其一を現代に再解釈する大胆かつ困難な挑戦に挑みながら、欧米への三度の研修を糧に琳派の現代的可能性に肉薄している様は見事である。嵐山の翠嵐ラグジュアリーホテル京都に納品した最初の記念碑的作品から、アジアの美術館からの受注も受けるなど、納品まで２年を待つ人気作家となった。室町以来空間とともに発展した障壁画や屏風絵など大作への展開も楽しみな逸材である。

Ryo Shinagawa is an up-and-coming artist who showed distinction during his postgraduate studies. It is brilliant that he makes the audacious and difficult challenge to re-interpret Suzuki Kiitsu of the Edo Rinpa school into the present, and closes in on the contemporary possibilities of Rinpa through his three training experiences in the West. Since his first memorial-like painting was delivered to Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto in Arashiyama, he now receives commissions from museums in Asia, and is an artist with a wait of two years until delivery. He is an outstanding talent, anticipative of great pieces such as sliding door paintings ‘shoheki-ga’ and folding screen paintings ‘byobu-e’ which developed as part of space since the Muromachi period.
