STATEMENT

I always hold the question “How can I express something I cannot tell anyone?” during my production, and photography is one of the  provisional answers that I fave found. I believe that a process, or something like a device or ritual is needed to convert the things that “cannot be told”, to express them. For example, if something slips out during a conversation, that may be the thing that they could not say, slipping out from their conscience.

My experiences and emotions seem to be exposed in the photographs, but they are secluded and can never be touched. They are there, just for the purposes of observing. The things that happen before becoming a photograph, are the unspoken words inside the mind, and the photographs are like the voice trying to express them.

At times, a photograph becomes like something that one approaches knowing they will be hurt, or carries on calling for knowing they will not be heard, or silently watches before their eyes. The photograph’s eyes create a different distance to that of the ordinary. A photograph confronts me with the fact that “that ‘used’ to be” in the past. And at times, brings a familiarity and newness, as something outside my memories, imagination and conscience. It is like finding something new, at the same time as remembering it. One can never touch it again, however, and that is what I seek for.

Testimonial

Maetani’s photographs capture the change in the environment and surroundings brought by the actions of the photographer himself. Self-portraits of him as a subject, stopping his actions halfway and staring bluntly at the camera are also inserted. The changes made by his actions are temporary and often take place away from people’s eyes, but they are far from being private spaces. This suggests that these places where the images are created, are right next to us, or even that we are already inside the darkness of this cave.
